My name is Sophie Carkulis and I am one of the art teachers this year at Daly Elementary. This will be my fourth year teaching and I am so excited to get started! I graduated in 2016 from Whitworth University in Spokane, WA with endorsements in Elementary Education and Visual Arts. After graduating I taught Kindergarten in a rural Alaskan village way above the Arctic Circle. After that, I received my Montessori Certificate while teaching at a Montessori school in Bellevue, WA. This last year I taught Kindergarten here in Hamilton and this year I am looking forward to be teaching one of my favorite subjects... art! My family consists of my husband Joel who is currently a math teacher in Stevensville, my best friend/puppy Arlo, my kitty Fang, our four chickens, and a little one we are expecting in November.
My goal as an art teacher is be to cultivate positive relationships as well as to foster a culture of creativity, inclusion, exploration andself expression. I want my students to know that art is a place where they can trust their ideas, have space to explore different mediums and let their creativity blossom. I aim to maintain a level of structure that enables students to take ownership of their work throughout the entire creative process -- from growing an idea, chasing curiosity, to care of their materials and clean up.
