Dave Thennis is a career educator with over 25 years of experience in educational leadership. He began his career as a high school science teacher and coach before moving into administration. Over the years, Dave has served in various leadership roles, including 10 years as an assistant principal, 5 years as a principal, and 3 years as a superintendent. He now begins a new chapter as Superintendent of the Hamilton School District.

Dave is a collaborative leader and team builder, dedicated to continuous improvement. He is committed to strengthening foundational skills for both teachers and students while embracing innovative approaches that create meaningful and engaging learning opportunities. During his time in Stevensville, Mr. Thennis led a district-wide curriculum transformation through collaboration, professional development, and a clear focus on student learning outcomes.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry-Biology from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and later completed his Master’s in Educational Leadership along with his superintendent endorsement at the University of Montana in Missoula.

A native of Helena, Montana, Dave and his wife Stephanie—also a school administrator—are proud parents of three children: Riley (23), Gavin (21), and Kaden (16). In his free time, Dave enjoys spending time with family and friends, attending sporting events, and enjoying the outdoors.

Mr. Thennis is honored to join the Hamilton School District and looks forward to building strong relationships with staff, students, families, and the community. He is committed to ensuring every student has an outstanding educational experience.
