This year, our 4th graders learned about Lewis & Clark, read "Captain's Dog", and went on a field trip to Travelers' Rest State Park (the place known to the Bitterroot Salish as "No Salmon").
To further our students' understanding of indigenous culture and how tribes & explorers communicated, Dr. Lanny Real Bird visited Daly Elementary on April 11. He did presentations on the history of the indigenous communication Plains Indian Sign Language (PISL). Through an authentic approach that promoted a respectful perspective on the Native American culture in a cross-curricular connection, students learned several Crow (Apsaalooke) hand signs. Dr. Real Bird is a member of the Montana Humanities program and an expert in Plains Indian Sign Language. We appreciate him taking the time to visit with our 4th graders!

The HHS baseball team won a nail biter on Saturday! They beat Bigfork 2-1 in 11 innings to make it to state! Congrats to the team! Come out and support them at HOME (Vester Wilson field) during the state tournament--their 1st game will be Thursday, May 22 @ 4PM against Billings Skyview. Go Broncs!
Congrats to the HHS softball team on beating Libby 3-1 to make it to STATE!! The state tournament will be held in Columbia Falls Thursday, May 22-Saturday, May 24. Go Broncs!!
GREAT JOB to the HHS girls track & field team for placing 3rd in the divisional tournament this week in Polson. The Class A state tournament will be held in Kalispel Friday, May 23-Saturday, May 24. Go Broncs!!
CONGRATS to the girls tennis team on winning the divisional tournament at home this week!!
The tennis team had 2 girls singles players, 1 boys singles player, 1 girls doubles team & 1 boys doubles team qualify for state!
The state tennis tournament will be held in Billings May 22-23. Go Broncs!

I have not done a great job communicating the successes of this year’s tennis season. Life gets busy, and we do or we don’t. This season I didn’t.
I plan an end of the season update, but tonight, after a rain delayed (thank you Canyons Athletic Club!) scattered first day of divisional tennis, I just want to encourage anyone and everyone to come to the brand new high school tennis courts Wednesday anytime between 9:00 am and dinner time. Even if it’s only for a few minutes.
Come experience the atmosphere: the camaraderie, the effort, the wins and the losses, the joy, the tears. Come rub elbows with an amazing group of kids from Hamilton, Corvallis, Stevensville, Dillon and Ronan. Come experience a great community of coaches and parents. Just come.
You won’t regret it.

40 students in our Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomed & Human Body Systems classes had a wonderful career awareness field trip to Bitterroot Health hospital all day Wednesday, May 7.
Some of the departments we toured were: surgery, rehab, International Heart Institute, nursing, clinics and job skills.
Thanks to all of the generous folks at Bitterroot Health and Area Health Education Center (AHEC) for giving our students this fabulous learning opportunity! And thanks, too, for the great pizza!
