Another tennis week+ gone by in a blink, a blur.
Statistically, the tennis team is crushing it. Boys are 12-2. Girls are 12-2.
Two moments really stand out from the week.
Monday, playing Stevi. The weather is threatening. Snow and rain clouds materialize, cling to and rain/snow on the Bitterroot Mountains, sending a torrent of wind and cold toward the courts. With each cloud, I look at the match list, hoping everyone gets to play. The sun materializes; clouds vanish along with the coats, hats, and gloves. Until the next cloud bank threatens, and everyone bundles up again.
Match after match is played. 2:30. 3:30. 4:30. 5:30. 6:30.
We finally put on the last two matches, somewhere around 7:00. Four players who had been waiting for hours to play, excitedly take the courts as a cloud breaks from the mountains, and extends into the valley. It begins raining on the courts. The fans scramble, grabbing belongings, bailing to their cars. It rains, in earnest.
But the players don’t leave the courts. Tennis is played. In the rain. With heavy wet tennis balls. My old high school coach, Bill Everett, and I smile. While we don’t say it, I know we both think we are doing something right.
Tuesday. Senior recognition night. The plan was food and fun at the courts after practice. The weather, as it has all year, has other plans. We improvise, like you so often have to do on the tennis court. A family offers to host and a high percentage of the 48 student-athletes on the team show up.
I am given a chance to speak about the seniors; I only hope the love I have for them, what they have meant to the program, to the team, to me, echoes in my words.
I begin every season telling my teams that we have, in front of us, the opportunity to create something special. While the season is not yet over and the tournament run lies in front of us, I am certain we have indeed done just that.
Animal Wonders visited Washington
The HHS Science Olympiad team is running a raffle to raise money for their trip to Nationals in Michigan on May 22nd. They have two great prizes available to win:
Prize 1: 2 rounds of 18 holes and a golf cart rental at the Hamilton Golf Club

Broncs Softball put up a good fight against Frenchtown but came up just a little short. They lost on Tuesday night 8-9.
Ravalli County Museum Pollination Stations
CWW finished up their three day trip to Yellowstone yesterday with morning wolf watching. Students met with a biological technician with the Yellowstone Wolf Project, and were able to observe a pack of wolves playing and feeding together. They also saw four grizzly bears, coyotes, bison, and a moose in the early morning hours. For most kids, this was their first time visiting Yellowstone. Thank you Stock Farm Greater Ravalli Foundation and HHS Families for Education for supporting our class and making this trip possible!

Our HHS tennis team is having an all-around awesome season! Here is the latest update from Coach Dufresne:
Another wild week of tennis.
The boys won duals against Loyola, Stevensville, and Corvallis, improving their record to 8-0.
The girls won duals against Loyola and Stevensville, before losing a close one (4-3) against Corvallis, giving them a 7-1 record for the year.
JV traveled to Butte Central where the boys won, and the girls lost.
We have amazing student athletes on this team. Three of the varsity players, while managing their school work and playing tennis, helped lead the Science Olympiad team to the state title. Five of the JV players, while managing their school work and playing tennis, helped lead the Envirothon team to a state championship.
I also want to recognize the bus drivers in our district for all that they do to help our students experience all the extra curricular activities available to them. The Butte trip meant the team spent around 900 miles on a bus in a five day span, which means bus drivers spent nearly 900 miles behind the wheel, driving our kids safely to and from. Our driver that morning had come back the night before from another trip, I believe taking the Science Olympiad team to Bozeman. Schools are short handed on a number of levels, unfortunately, and bus drivers are getting harder and harder to come by, despite their importance to our kids. So a huge thank you to those we have in our district.
Finally, we’ve had some amazing team dinners this year. Numerous families have opened their homes and cooked dinner for a great group of student athletes, helping build a culture of togetherness and joy. The team dinners may honestly be my favorite part of coaching this year, because sports, like life, should be celebrated. And it’s always best to celebrate together.
